TECHNICAL ‘TECH’ PACKS

Everyone knows they have to make the garments they design and the manufacturing cost is always thought about, but the prep for this, the Tech Pack for clothing, usually isn’t something people give advice on, list on websites under costing sheets or even consider.

I have a number of clients who don’t believe that they need to get Tech Packs done, mainly because they have close family or friend connections to factories, or they just believe it’s a waste of money. In some cases they would be right.

On the internet I see hundreds of bad quality packs that cost anything up to US$400. Ridiculous! But if done properly, a Tech Pack WILL save you money. But regardless of the training courses I do. The webinars and the blog posts, I will never convince them otherwise… well for a couple of years at least…..

Many people think that a few pictures and explanations would save money and time, but they are thinking short term. You, since you are reading this, are in a great frame of mind. You’re thinking long term savings and you are quite right to do so.

So what does this actually mean in terms of real cost to you? The answer might surprise you…. I’ve had clients that, on their own, have been really lucky and only had to do 3 or 4 rounds of sampling. Others have done 7 or 8 before the factory has stopped communication and they’ve had to start again. Believe it or not, including fabrics, shipping costs and time, these brands have spent over US$ 10,000 making mistakes [and those are the lucky ones] and spent up to 3 years trying to make one sample.

SO WHAT IS THE POINT OF A TECH PACK?…..

Factories are a business and don’t deal in creativity. They deal in money. Cost. Production time and Product. Just because the end result is fashion, does not mean they think creatively like you.

Factories don’t and won’t make decisions on your product for you. They won’t make assumptions on what you really need. They won’t fill in the information gaps you don’t have and they won’t “just get it”.

Factories are liable for mistakes in terms of cost, so they will only produce exactly what is written on the page in front of them. If the information is wrong, then that is down to you and you alone. You have to make sure that “THE page in front of them” is exactly what you want and need.

Before you can be sure of your ability to transmute DESIRE into its monetary equivalent, you will require SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE of the service, merchandise, or profession which you intend to offer in return for fortune. Perhaps you may need much more specialized knowledge than you have the ability or the inclination to acquire, and if this should be true, you may bridge your weakness through the aid of your “Master Mind” group

• In order to the artwork for you, we will need some sketches, photos or indication of what you want us to do. These are also required if you wish for us to give you a quote.
• We will give you a quote before we start any work so that you can approve the cost and budget if needed.
• All payments for design work, must be paid before work is carried out.
• Payment covers copyright permissions to be transferred from our designers to you and without payment, you do not own the rights for the artwork to be used in any way.
• Consultations are an initial first stage. We may need to contact you for clarification during this time on any points we research for your Plan
• All meetings, emails and documents you send us are confidential to each person and nothing is discussed with any third party, for any reason, unless you give us instructions to do so.
• Consultations can be a single meeting or as needed via Skype. Please book your appointment via the Appointments Calendar.
• Sessions must be kept strictly to 1 hour since our calendar get’s very full.  You can book consecutive sessions and there are no restrictions on the number, or frequency of sessions.
• All payments for online Consultation sessions must be completed when booking the time slot otherwise the session is cancelled.
